All About Andaman & Nicobar Island
Located off the coast of India, the islands form a union territory in the Bay of Bengal. The Andamans are part of a submerged mountain range. They are the gateway between the western Pacific and the Indian Ocean. Moreover, they serve as an important trading route and chokepoint in the Indian Ocean.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a small union territory located in the Indian Ocean. The largest island is Port Blair, which is located about a thousand kilometers from the mainland. The area is comprised of four districts: the North Andaman district, the South Andaman district, and the North and Middle Andaman. In the past, the islands were inhabited by the Burmese people, but today, there is a population of just over 3,000.
When the British left in 1868, the islands were part of one administrative territory, and a Chief Commissioner served as the governor. The island's location in the Gulf of Thailand meant that the islands were closer to the mainland. When India was independent, Burma was still under British rule and the Andamans were a place of refuge. Despite the isolation, the islands grew into a major economy during the 1950s, with tourism becoming a major economic contributor.
